My Learning Style

I have found that I am a sequential, global, visual learner who works well with a mix of inter and intrapersonal activities. I do well exploring topics on my own and then bringing them to the table as a group to further refine these ideas. The group SIG project is a great example of this. Iwas able to learn and explore different types of technology on my own and then when we worked together on skype or e-mail I was able to complete some ideas and share others. These also seem to be important learning styles for an online course. It would be difficult for a kinestetic leaner to take an online course. I also find myself making connections to other things I have learned and envisioning how I will use what I am using currently.

I am not much of a reflective learner. I need to come together with people at some point. Whether it be classmates or instructors. This seems to help contextualize and frame what we have been working on.

I would be nearly impossible for any teacher to use all of these teaching methods. However, being aware of them may help with expectations and assessment. By keeping lectures brief, using visual aids and allowing sufficient tome for students, more learning styles can be addressed. Allowing students to submit class projects as a means of formal assessment will allow students to gravitate towards what they feel most comfortable with. This could then result in a higher level of student egagement and a better overall success rate by the students at large.

In my multiple intelligence test, I scored the highest in Nature, Body Movement, Self and Social. I scored the lowest in Music. That makes sense. I do like to be outside and my major as well as my masters degree are in biology. I have been an athlete and a coach and slightly prefer working on my own to groups although I do enjoy working with others as well.

Selective Logging

I have been looking fo a good example of selective logging to show to my AP environmental science class. We talk about it all the time and there are diagrams of it in the text but no pictures. Here they will clearly be able to see that some trees were harvested, yet there are several medium age trees and even a few mature trees remaining. This photo juxtaposed with a clear cut forest would serve as a stark contrast.

Internet Security

The short lesson on msconfig showed me how I can quickly see what programs are starting up with my computer. This will allow me to look for any programs that look suspicious.

I had forgotten all about the Ad-Aware program. Used it a long time ago and with the increase in malware and spyware I thought it would be a good idea to install it on my new computer.

I had always know I needed a hardware and software firewall but I had no idea why and what they did. Having a better understanding of these components has helped me to appreciate them and keep up on their activity.
